A realistic, walkable day-by-day plan for your trip to Barcelona — the icons, the old town and the views, without rushing.

Three days is enough for the highlights of Barcelona — if you plan the route well.

Three days is the most common length for travel to Barcelona, and it is enough to see the essentials without exhausting yourself. The trick is grouping sights by neighborhood so you walk more and commute less. This itinerary does exactly that: one day for Gaudí, one for the old town, one for the parks and views. Book the big-ticket sights (Sagrada Família, Park Güell) online before you arrive — that single step of trip planning saves you hours in queues.

Day 1 — Gaudí and the Eixample

Start early at the Sagrada Família with a 9:00 am slot, before the crowds and in the best morning light. Afterwards, walk or take the metro to Passeig de Gràcia, Barcelona's grand modernista avenue, to see Gaudí's two famous houses side by side: Casa Batlló and La Pedrera (Casa Milà), a five-minute walk apart. Pick one to go inside (Casa Batlló for fantasy, La Pedrera for the rooftop) and admire the other from the street. End the day with tapas in the Eixample.

Day 2 — The Old Town

Spend the morning in the Gothic Quarter following our self-guided walking route past Roman walls, the cathedral and hidden squares. Wander down La Rambla, dip into La Boqueria market for an early lunch, then cross into El Born for the Picasso Museum and the basilica of Santa Maria del Mar. Finish at Barceloneta for a sunset stroll along the beach and a seafood dinner.

Day 3 — Park Güell and the views

Book the first slot at Park Güell and ride the outdoor escalators up to avoid the hill. From there, drop down into the Gràcia neighborhood for lunch on one of its village-like squares. In the afternoon, head to Montjuïc for the castle, the MNAC art museum and the Magic Fountain show after dark — or, for a free alternative, watch the sunset from the Bunkers del Carmel.

Trip-planning tips: buy a Hola Barcelona travel card or a T-casual for the metro; stay in the Eixample or El Born to walk everywhere; and reserve Sagrada Família and Park Güell days in advance — both sell out in high season.
